Unintentional Homeschooling

Tomorrow starts our first day of homeschooling. I guess I had kind of always wanted to home school our kids, I just didn’t imagine it would be under these circumstances… The Corona virus has caused the closure of all of our Michigan K-12 schools for the next three weeks. My guess is, based on the way things are going around the rest of the world, that we may not be going back for this year…

That being the case, we’ve decided to set up a little makeshift school room in our basement using an art table and we will be doing our best to follow the schedule that is normal for our eldest in her Kindergarten classroom. Our three year old will be sitting alongside her and doing his own learning at his own pace with a lot of play breaks.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous that this might be really difficult. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the patience of teachers. Especially the elementary school set. You guys are saints and I don’t know how you do it. Seriously.

We will be utilizing some Preschool/Kindergarten work books as part of our daily curriculum along with tapping into some online resources that her school provided us with (see below). In addition to school work, will also be including some piano lessons (which I’ll be learning right along side them) and lots of time outside in nature, digging and learning in the garden and in the kitchen.

How is your family handling these (impending) school closures? What are you planning to do to keep your little ones from going blind with boredom or strangling each other?!
